About the Work

A portrait of quiet visibility, negative space, and emergence from the dark.

Luma began quietly.

She was not planned as a major work. I started her at an art show years ago, drawing freehand in white charcoal on black fine art paper simply to keep my hands busy while people moved through the space.

I was seated near a glass wall, working in the background, not expecting her to become anything more than a way to pass the time.

But as her profile began to emerge from the dark, people started to stop.

Without realizing it, I would look up and find a small crowd gathered nearby, watching her come into being line by line. What began as a quiet practice piece became the thing that drew people in.

There is something fitting in that.

Luma is built almost entirely through contrast and negative space — from what is withheld as much as what is revealed. She does not demand attention. She appears slowly. She waits. And then, somehow, she is all you can see.

For me, she carries the feeling of being seen before you are fully ready for it. The moment when something private, uncertain, or unfinished steps into the light and reveals more strength than you knew it held.

She did not arrive with noise.

She arrived from the dark.

And people stopped to witness her becoming.
