He rises, soaked and silent, from the water’s edge — fully armed, fully present. No part of him is relaxed. No piece of him careless. Every detail accounted for. Every breath measured.
“To Protect” is a hyperrealistic dry pastel portrait — my first-ever figurative piece. Three painstaking months of magnified detail, layer after layer, all done by hand. I used a magnifying lamp for most of it, refusing to settle until I could feel the exact weight of the water, the pressure of the moment, the quiet force of the man beneath the gear.
He challenged every skill I thought I had. And when I finally finished him, I didn’t just see a soldier. I saw discipline, devotion, and the quiet kind of courage that never asks to be seen — but shows up anyway.
He is the protector — of country, of principle, of those who cannot protect themselves.
