About the Work
A portrait of service, discipline, and the quiet weight of protection
To Protect began as a private commission — a tribute to a real soldier, created from a still image of him emerging from the water, fully equipped, silent, and composed.
At the time, I did not yet understand the full weight of what I had agreed to create. It was my first figurative commission, and the scale was small compared to the amount of detail the image demanded. Every strap, reflection, ripple, piece of gear, and bead of water had to be built by hand with absolute precision.
For nearly three months, I worked through the piece layer by layer, often under a magnifying lamp, trying to capture not only the realism of the equipment and water, but the presence of the man beneath it.
He is not shown in action.
He is shown in emergence — rising from the water with purpose, control, and quiet force.
This piece challenged every skill I thought I had. It taught me patience, precision, and the cost of true detail. More than that, it taught me something I had not yet fully understood: the value of my own work.
What began as a commission became a turning point.
A portrait of protection, service, and the kind of strength that does not need to announce itself.
