Capturing her essence as she gazes upon what we cannot see. Her mind is elsewhere, not even realizing her photo is being taken. So often we have opinions of what we see in the outer world, not realizing an entire inner world is happening to someone else right before our very eyes.
She emerged in two days - not from a studio, but in the hum of a Christmas craft fair. I sat behind
glass, white charcoal in hand, drawing on black art paper I had never used before. No shadows,
only light - each stroke a highlight that shaped her from the darkness, teaching me the language of
negative space as I worked. The air outside my booth filled with quiet onlookers, faces pressed
close to the glass, watching her take form in real time. Her gaze grew with each mark, luminous and
commanding, until she felt less like a drawing and more like a presence.
